Growth of Oregon Tax Expenditures - Presentation & Editorial

Steve Robinson's (Decision Metrics) presentation (The Great State Budget Crunch) has received quite a bit of buzz lately. After seeing the presentation The Statesman Journal wrote the linked editorial. (You may also download the pdf.) 

Here's an excerpt from the article: 

"Legislators owe it to themselves, and to their constituents, to see his presentation. The data are so eye-opening that they could dramatically alter the final weeks of the 2011 legislative session. Robinson's bottom line is that Oregon has been handing out tax breaks — officially called tax expenditures — far faster than it collects taxes."

Tax expenditures are, quite simply, spending programs implemented through the tax code. These programs give people and businesses special tax credits, deductions, exclusions, exemptions, deferrals, and preferential rates in support of various government policies.....

Thanks for the resources on the financial crunch of the state. What is surprising is that taxes are getting higher despite the stumbling of the economy.

I don't see why that's a problem, form 2290. A stumbling economy will cope with its shortages and one method to exact funds from the people is through levying taxes.
